Kids overwhelmed over the holidays? Belly massage might help

christmas-boy-sadDecember is really just around the corner! And for those that observe any of the holidays at this time of year, it can be exciting but also busy and stressful.  While kids are giddy with the prospect of what’s coming, their nervous systems too are on alert.  This amped-up activity in the mind-body can bring nervousness, sleepless nights and mood swings.  There are simple and brief ways to help offset some of this anxiety kids experience.  Let me show you one way, like this video demo my daughter and I put together!

A strategy for stress resilience over the season

It’s a sweet self-massage for the belly using a soft, air-filled ball*.  Just 5 minutes can help with:

  • creating a deeper, belly breath
  • developing self- awareness of holding patterns within the torso
  • releasing tension in the belly

Along with that, the nervous and digestive system down-regulate.  This brings balance back to the whole mind-body system. It also makes a nice addition to the bedtime routine, prepping the mind and body for a good night’s sleep 😉

Really, this practice is great for parents and kids alike, anytime of year.  Enjoy!

*NOTE: In the video, we are using the Coregeous® ball from Yoga Tune Up® but a similar kids toy ball would be a decent substitute.  I do have some of these and other therapy balls in stock.  If you would like to purchase one and are in the Greater Toronto Area,  message me to place your order.
