It’s no secret that we, as women, are way too hard on ourselves. Yet, we get caught up in wanting to be all things to all those we love and care for that we rarely take a moment to reflect on the amazing creatures we are!
We worry we’re not giving enough of our time (to our family, our friends, our work). We size ourselves up against other women and society’s expectations; thinking we need to dress better, look better, be thinner! The list of faults goes on… So, as we approach Mother’s Day, I thought it appropriate to share the following fact that I found when I read The Body Myth by Dr. Margo Maine:
A female adult’s body is meant to have 22% fat supply, which is enough for an ovulating female to survive famine for 9 months – the length of a full-term pregnancy!
Isn’t that amazing?!?! It turns out, female fat is not a curse but rather a gift and a sign of our womanhooh. This little fact also shows that we can endure so much. So much so that our bodies are designed to survive famine. We are a strong and beautiful species!
So catch yourself next time you go to criticize your body. Whether you are a partner, Mom, Mom-to-be, Grandma, Aunt, Sister, Daughter – be kinder to yourself and to all the women in your life. Celebrate our magnificence.
Happy Mothers Day!!
